Can I use towels as bedding instead of wood shaving/carefresh for my rats? - pictures of towels

I saw many photos of cages of rats and humans, to cover the floor in towels or cloth material instead of wood chips or care fresh.

I just want to know if you do that? I would do it because it saves money. But I think I have to wash the towels every day, right?

Does this smell for a long time?
